Surveys

Using Surveys

Surveys allows Admins to create surveys and send these to all App Users or a select group of App Users defined by age, gender and interest. Multiple answer and question types are available as well as more sophisticated options like routing.

In the App, users see a list of surveys they are eligible to answer. These appear based upon publishing and expiry dates. Surveys provides a real-time view of survey responses. A CSV file can be downloaded for more detailed analysis.

Surveys can be used for a wide variety of purposes:

  • Views on public realm improvements
  • Satisfaction surveys for local events and services
  • Consultations on local issues, e.g. waste, vandalism, transport

Surveys can also be attached to GeoAlerts so users are prompted to answer them in a specific location.

Creating a Survey

Working With Surveys

Surveys are created and managed using the SurveyEngine editor. This comprises of:

  • Overview – providing a list of available surveys (Draft/Published/Unpublished) with preview, results, settings (Targeting/Publishing Dates/Publishing Approvals) and deletion options.
  • Survey Creator – accessed via Create New Survey or clicking Edit to amend an existing survey.
  • Analytics – showing real-time answers for surveys.
  • Media Library – allowing you to store and share images you might wish to use regularly for surveys.

Creating A New Survey

  • In the overview section, click on Create New Survey.
  • Every survey has an Introduction slide (Allowing you to explain the purpose of your survey) and an End slide (Allowing you to thank participants)  as standard. Fill these in as appropriate.
  • When you wish to add questions and answers to your survey, click on Add Slide. You will see a new slide (1) is added to the slide navigator.
  • If you click on the Slide, a menu will appear giving you options for 1. Question Type, 2. Answer Type, 3. No of Answers and Routing.
  • If you click on the options, you’ll notice the slide changes format to accommodate each answer and question type. Once you have selected the right combination, fill in the text or content as you see fit.
  • If you wish to change the order of your slides, simply drag and drop the slides in the slide navigator.
  • Routing works by allowing you to direct the user to a specific slide depending on their answer. E.g. Slide 3 – Are you a local resident? Yes / No Answer. If Yes, then take the user to Slide 4 – Which road do you live in? Text Answer. If No, then take the user to Slide 5 – Which town do you live in? Text Answer.
  • You can test your survey at any time by clicking on the Preview button.

  • You will also need to define the Survey Audience by selecting from the Interest, Age and Gender options.
  • Depending on your user privileges, you will be able to put the survey live yourself or you many need to request another administrator approves it to go live.

How Surveys Appear In The App

  • The App shows a mobile-friendly view of the survey.
  • Users see a list of the surveys available to them – depending on the targeting and whether the survey is live.
  • Users also see how long they have left to answer each survey.
  • Once the survey has been completed, the user can’t open the survey again.
  • If the user closes the survey half-way through, when they open the survey again they will see the next incomplete question.
  • When the survey expires, the survey disappears from the user’s list.

Getting The Results

  • If you click on Results for a particular survey in Overview, you’ll get a breakdown of questions and answers based on the number of responses received to date.
  • Answers to free text questions like Essay Box aren’t shown in results. You need to download a CSV file to see these.
  • We provide two types of CSV download – Data Results (reduced number of fields for ease of understanding) and Full Results (all fields from the database for more detailed analysis).

Tips for Surveys

  • Surveys has been designed for quick, informal surveys people can easily answer on the move.
  • We suggest you keep your surveys to an easily understood topic with 3-10 questions that are direct and to the point.
  • If surveys take longer than 30-60 seconds to complete, you will notice a high number of users not completing the survey. Try and put yourself in the shoes of your target demographic when creating your surveys!
